Melanism

Mutation

All pigment on a colonist is darkened considerably, often almost to black. This mutation can present in three variations:

  • The entire design is affected, darkening all markings, including white spotting and minimum white.  White spotting remains the lightest color on the colonist.
  • Only white spotting markings are affected, creating a "black spotting" effect; markings like appaloosa or roan must be black and darker than everything they cover.  The base and all other markings remain normal.
  • An "all of the above" effect, where the entire design is darkened and white spotting markings become black spotting.
