The once warm and sunny day became an almost chilly night as the primary sun slowly made its way along the sky before dipping below the horizon and throwing Mireh into darkness. The wide streets of Or'sol became dimly lit by various means but where the hunters lurked, glowstones were the primary source of soft and multicoloured light. The traps had not been set up long, however some were clearly more successful than others at catching the Hudlah - which were now making the stony ground appear as if it were a shimmering cloth as the night called to the rodents activity.
Far'lan had a large strapped woven basket where he was collecting carcasses of Hudlah he had accidentally trodden on during the set up process. Much to Novato's disdain, the basket was already a third full - clearly outshining their intended traps.
Hours had passed with the trio sitting in silence, observing their set of traps and taking notes, then emptying the traps and caging any live caught Hudlah. Far'lan with the added task of collecting all the Hudlah they accidentally ended during the process. Finally exasperated and tired of the disproportionate success between their traps and just Far'lan's Basket of Bereavement, a nickname jokingly bestowed, Novato let out a defeated sigh and lowered his notes.
"I believe we should call it. Do it your way." Novato referenced Far'lan's desire for extermination over capture of the small pests.
Artaygo spoke up, quickly interjecting himself. "You know, there is one trick I forgot about until just now..." earning him a surprised glare from both his father Far'lan and son Novato. "I mean, I use it all the time on the ranch" he chuckled nervously, avoiding eye contact with the others "to... uhm... keep on top of the Hudlah that eat the Bokbok feed."
"Are you kidding me!?" Far'lan shouted; Novato merely staring with his eyes and mouth agape in disbelief. "You have been holding out on us for this long? Why did you not say anything earlier!?" Far'lan's voice raising high.
Artaygo hung his head in shame then murmured "I was just so excited... to see you both working together for once." This caused Novato and Far'lan to pause and exchange a glance with one another. "I will go get the supplies needed. Could you both take the full cages away? I worry about the noise they make warning off the others."
Artaygo set off and returned shortly with a stack of deep containers and some wood contraptions. As he showed the others how to set up this surprisingly simple trap, Novato seemed partially unimpressed.
"How will this work better than any of the other things we have tried thus far?"
"Just watch and see. It may not work better - I have never dealt with an infestation before. This is merely a population control mechanism."
Artaygo walked off and set up his container contraption before returning and explaining it in detail whilst the Hudlah obliged a demonstration.
"The Hudlah walk up the ramp and onto this rotation dowel which holds the bait. This can be anything, however something like a sweet and smelly paste works best so that when the dowel rotates" he paused as a Hudlah kindly demonstrated this process in the distance, falling into the deep container as the dowel rotated beneath it "the bait will stay on the dowel instead of going inside the container - and thus useful for luring the next one in."
The simplicity gobsmacked both Far'lan and Novato, both having prided themselves on their prowess yet not having thought of a rotating reusable trap of such simplicity.
"The best part of this mechanism" Artaygo continued on, acquiring a teaching voice "is that it does not require much intervention and resetting. I place these around the ranch, especially the barns, and leave them be. I check on them once a day usually, but breeding time twice a day."
"I imagine, given the sheer numbers of Hudlah, we will need to check the containers a lot." Novato thought out loud.
"With enough of them around, hopefully we can get this plague under control!" Far'lan agreed. Seeing only benefits to a trap that doesn't require sitting out all night resetting traps.
