Even in the tumultuous waters off the coast of Rekes, shipwrecks were rare. Most of the time they knew to steer clear of the sharp fingers of rock that erupted from the water, and more that hid beneath the surface, but this one had foundered and been blown on the rocks. The ship hadn't been able to withstand the storm winds and the sharp stone, and so had shattered and fallen into the depths. Thankfully, the drift had given the crew enough time to disembark, and so nobody had been hurt.
They were employing divers to dive deep and retrieve pieces of the ship's valuable cargo, and so some of those from Skyward had agreed to it. Ambergris and Sky had experience diving deep for the underwater mines, and Whiteout was comfortable in the water.
Standing on the shore on a calmer day, they watched the waves. Though they were not the same storm-tossed grasping things, the waves on the Rekes coast were never what one would call tame. Foam flashed in the sunlight as it sprayed where the waves crashed, beating against the shore. Seabirds soared and called overhead, and creatures scuttled in the surf, fighting the sucking pull of the waves.
Sky slipped their breathing mask on and spread their wings. "Good look with the surf," he said simply and took off, sending up a spray of sand.
Ambergris glared after them and muttered something disgruntled about cheater, but Whiteout was already slipping on her mask and heading towards the surf. She easily dove under the crashing waves, pulling herself and her gear along through the waterborn sand that clouded her vision.
The water past the sand churned up by the waves was clear, the sun shining in ribbons through the blue depths. Sky was waiting for them, bubbles still rising up from his blue fur, nearly indistinguishable against the color of the water. They waved, startling a few fished that flashed away, and they both turned to wait for Ambergris.
Ae emerged from the churned up sand, shaking aer head, and swam over to them, pulling out a locator. They'd tested the beacon on the shore, and ae turned, honing in on the direction of the signal. The locator chirped, and then they were off.
The ship had wrecked on the pillars of stone they passed, but the currents and the slope of the ocean floor beneath them had meant that the wreckage had slid deeper into the depths. As they swam, the water got colder, and Whiteout felt her ear tips start to go numb.
They began to descend, following the seabed, and as the light faded, they clicked on red beams that wouldn't disrupt the organisms that lived down here. It lent everything an eerie light, painting Whiteout in shades of bloody red and rendering Sky in strange purple shades. Ambergris' coat was mostly unchanged, except aer white patches were now a bloody reddish tone.
The chill began to seep into their bones, despite their precautions, and Whiteout was glad when their lights flashed off the side of something metallic below. Ambergris' beacon was chirping like it would become a bird and fly off, so ae turned it off.
The three split up, Ambergris and Whiteout delving deeper into the wreckage while Sky stayed along the outside, wings preventing him from squeezing through tight spaces. They chattered briefly, but the cold and oppressive pressure kept them from talking much. Eventually, Sky found some cargo that was easily accessible, and they set about preparing it for the swim upwards.
They bound it up in a net that all three of them would hold as they swam, so that the weight was evenly distributed. The markings on the sides of the container designated what company it was from, but wasn't any of their business, though Whiteout took note. The three made sure their harnesses were secure, and then began to pull. The water took some of the weight off, but it was still not easy to backtrack. Sky was using their wings to 'fly' through the water, while Ambergris and Whiteout were stuck paddling, looking almost silly in comparison.
Still, with some work, the water began to lighten and the pressure to relieve. They all shared a sigh of relief and continued towards the surface, cargo in tow.
