"You were right - there is a whole sounder of Nukaps" Cacao said, pointing at the animals with her nose horn.
Wild Child's research was proven to be correct, as the spot he discovered was swarmed with the creatures they were looking for. Among the huge mushrooms and floating spores of L'hatzif there was an entire group of six-legged pigs of different ages, including the little piglets. The adults were busy, digging through the muddy ground with their snouts, hoping to dig out something to eat. The babies - and chubbier, lazier adults - were soaking in the mud puddles. They were quite hidden - surrounded by the thick foliage and the hats of the giant mushroom forest. No wonder they all seemed to feel so relaxed.
"They look so happy to the point I feel bad that we have to hunt them…" Pumpernickel sighed, putting down the basket full of mushrooms prepared to lure the animals a little closer. "Are you sure that they are going to like these mushrooms? It would be a shame if getting covered in dirt from digging them up was all for nothing"
"Oh, shush" the rust bull rolled his eyes with a soft chuckle. "Since that prince told us he has a craving for these, I've been reading for an attire week about Nukaps to the point they appear in my sleep. These truffles are their favourite!"
Cacao nodded, as she could confirm that Wild Child had indeed spent a lot of time with his nose buried in the books before planning out the trip. She was so proud of them - the whelps were growing up so fast and this one was already a promising gatherer's assistant. She was proud of Pumpernickel as well, although it seemed that he was not too happy about returning to L'hatzif and its humid climate. The brick doe stretched out her neck to look once again at the animals. Looking at the three little piglets bothering their mom by hopping around and squeaking, she reminded herself how these two were little whelps not so long ago.
"Can we avoid hunting the little ones and their moms?" She asked, her ears flattening a little. "They look so adorable I don't think I would be able to hurt them…"
"That's a question for the hunt's leader" the silver male shrugged, pointing with his horn in Wilde's direction. "To be fair… That prince seemed to be interested in meat with more fat than the rest of the family - his sister literally wants rats. And these babies? They only jump around and squeak I doubt there is much fat on them"
Wilde, at that time, was busy setting up a little camp for them, underneath a huge mushroom's cap. He set one big, brown waterproof tent, to match the terrain, and a smaller one - which was probably going to be used to store the prey away from humidity. His ears flicked as he was sharpening three, wooden spears.
"Oh, yeah" he agreed with Cacao and Pumpernickel. "The babies are not worth it - it's better to attack the bigger hogs instead. They will be easier to catch, too. Now, Pumpernickel - give them some of the truffles!"
He nodded and treaded carefully, before grasping a bunch of truffles and throwing them towards the Nukaps. The group has raised their heads as they have heard food falling on the ground and a few of them came forward to investigate. As the animals approached closer to their hiding place, Wild Child handed Cacao and Pumpernickel sharp, wooden spears. His idea with luring them closer was great - there were a bunch of Nukaps quite close to them, making them easy targets. She grasped onto her spear and quilted her eyes, targeting one spotted Nukap. She waited for a while, aiming, before flinging her weapon.
Cacao's spear pierced through the six-legged pig and it did not suffer for too long, before letting out its last oink. The largest Nukap, spotting the danger, let out a loud squeal, causing the entire sounder to scatter. Unfortunately, Pumpernickel's spear missed the pig and pierced the ground instead.
"Chase them back there!" Wild Child commanded him. "Before they all escape!"
He nodded and instantly jumped out from the mushrooms they were hiding behind. The brick Tsabhua herself left the hideout, chasing after the escaping animals. As she was "herding" them this way, she managed to block the way of one of the Nukap. Then, she noticed two squeaking piglets behind it, which it was hiding with its own body. Cacao moved away, allowing the Nukap family to flee, yet stabbing the chubby hog that tried to escape after them. Hearing another squeal caused her to turn her head around, only to notice that Pumpernickel managed to hunt down one of the creatures as well. With a sigh, she lowered herself to pick up the motionless carcass of the Nukap.
Wild Child has soon emerged from between the mushrooms, with a spear with a scarlet tip and with two, dead Nukaps under his armpit. His strategy really did work. Pumpernickel had less luck, only bringing one Nukap down. However, it was a pretty chubby one - it should suit the prince's tastes (even if - in Cacao's opinion - they were a bit unhealthy) However, Cacao was never a fan of hunting, yet she knew that it had to be done. She simply hoped that what they caught would be enough for the Tark'ee prince.
