Urchin looked at the terrain ahead, the varying shades of green grass blowing gently in the wind that swept over the various hills and mounds. It was almost memorizing, but he was worried about how much of a nightmare it would become during hunting. So much wide open space, there wasn't even a scraggly tree or dying bush anywhere to be seen. Nowhere for prey to hide, but also nowhere to set up an ambush.
"So Mink, Achernar, any idea if there's more cover farther in?" Urchin questioned, turning to the two tsabhua behind him.
"Well we're pretty far away from the place where we hunted for huldah last time, and we were able to see far enough to pick out the plateau when first arriving previously so my best guess is that it's all flat." Achernar piped up, turning to look directly at Urchin and Mink nodding in agreement for a moment before stopping and tilting his head.
"Hey, do you guys hear something?" Mink asked. Urchin paused for a moment, listening to his surroundings. He heard the sheer noise of salty water crashing into sand behind him, slowly but surely eroding the rock. Still, that couldn't be the noise Mink was referring to, could it? But he couldn't hear anything else… Wait no, he could hear something else.
"Guys!! Guys! I'm so glad you're here you've gotta help me!" A small, pink, slithering figure bounded towards them, occasionally jumping up over the grass.
"Raspberry! You are not supposed to be all the way out here, where's Depth? You didn't ditch him did you!" Achernar scolded the little wyrm, pointing her finger at them accusatorily. Urchin let out a deep, long sigh. Mink shrugged.
"I DID NOT SNEAK OFF!!!!" Raspberry huffed. "Depth put me in charge of helping some other whelps plant some crops but some stinking jaebo have started to eat them all! You guys came here to hunt didn't you? So go hunt them before they eat all of MY hard work!" The wyrm ordered, looking up at the three of them expectantly.
"All right, all right, we'll help you with the jaebo problem, just calm down." Urchin pleaded, Raspberry could be a bit of a pain to deal with when he's mad. Not that he could blame the wyrm, he was still a whelp after all.
"We will help, only after you say please." Achernar ranted.
"Especially since we came here to hunt huldah, not jaebo." Mink chimed in.
"Ugh fine, could you three please come and help me get rid of the stinking jaebo."
"Now that you've asked." Achernar said, turning to look directly at Urchin "We'd be happy to help."
"Great! Now let's go before there's no crops left to save!" Raspberry shouted, and began leaping southwest. For a little guy he was surprisingly fast, making the tsabhua run to catch up with him.
"Here, look! They're eating the stuff we just planted!" Raspberry whined. Using one of his winglets to point at an area that was fenced off. It was a small farm with old, weathered wooden fencing that had once been painted white but now only showed occasional flakes of pale color. The soil smelled strongly of organic fertilizer, and looked airy and soft like freshly tilled soil does. They didn't see any jaebo at first but sure enough they saw one creeping in between the rows of young plants with its brown pelt and spike shimmering in the sunlight, making chirping noises as it did.
"Now that you three are here, we surely stand a chance!" Raspberry exclaimed.
"Woah slow your roll there kiddo, hunting is dangerous. You have to stay back while we do our thing." Urchin put a hand on Raspberries head as he said so, ruffling his feathers.
"But I wanna help! I don't even have to do any of the dangerous stuff!" Raspberry reasoned. Looking up at Urchin and trying his best to plead with his eyes.
"Well there is something you can do to help us, you can find Depth and tell him about the jaebo." Mink offered, lowering his head to be on-level with Raspberry. The wyrm considered it for a moment then nodded and bounded away, presumably to where Depth's ship was.
"Alright now that he's gone, let's get some traps set up then go back to what we came here for." Achernar looked to Mink and Urchin, who nodded and began approaching the farm.
"There's no way we'd be able to catch any of these without something ranged, and since we don't have bows this is probably the best call." Mink added, reaching into his backpack and pulling out the supplies to set up several snares.
"Here. each of you take two and set it up along the outer rows. If you find one do not touch it, their spines are nasty."
