As it turns out, Hojenst pelts fetched quite a nice price. To Morgain's suprise, the merchant he had met up with to sell the ones that the colonists had hunted near the Mireh outpost had complimented the quality of them, claiming that rarely did he find pelts this pristine.
After hearing this, the leaders of the colony had seen an opportunity. Especially since the Xunari at the outpost had noticed an overpopulation of the nearby Hojenst. Having birthed their young earlier this year, their numbers had exploded. And since some nearby herds had merged into one, this also meant that the bigger herd were better at protecting their young together. Still, with the harsh Kerah months approaching, there would not be enough food to sustain them all.
Which is why Rose, Koi, and Quartz were sat together in one of the towers of the Mireh outpost. The wobbly wooden tower was sat on top of one of the hills, which made it the perfect vantage point to observe the herds below. The Hojenst were peacefully grazing on long, juicy grass. Kerah had not quite hit the region yet, so for now everything was well.
"We should be able to split some members of the group- lure them away from the main herd and then- well, y'know." Quartz said, awkwardly gesturing to the DPIP-issued blasters the group had laying in the corner. The blasters were well-used, some a tad rusty. They had gotten them from another colony who had claimed to no longer need them.
Koi nodded, handing one of the blasters to Rose. "There's no way we can take the entire herd, but if we split off a smaller group we should be fine. We'll just have to make sure that the rest of the herd doesn't feel like there's a fight to be had."
Rose nodded. "We'll have to make sure to get the ones we shoot away as soon as possible- the longer we hang around the more threatened they will feel."
Quartz nodded. "I can bring the cart up if you guys can handle the Hojenst by yourselves? That way we can get out as quick as possible."
Koi nodded. "So long as we focus this should be an easy job."
---
At the end of the day, they had quite a good amount of pelts to process, as well as having reduced the numbers of the herd some. Unfortunately, they didn't get quite as much done as they had intended, with the herd quickly catching on and fleeing. The would likely be back later, and whenever that happened the trio would be able to pick off a few more members of the herd.
Since they would likely have to return some other day, Koi and Rose decided to stick around in Mireh for a little while longer, keeping the members of the outpost company for a few weeks to make sure everything would run smoothly. But for now Koi patted both Quartz and Rose on their backs, congratulating them on a job well done.
