"So, what are we looking for today?" Glow asked, walking up to Lairi and Marchus. She wore a few bags with a small knife and some medical supplies, and looked on with mild awe at the other's equipment, well-used. She admired their confidence, and though she wasn't sure how she felt about the end goal of it, she wanted to be able to read the trails and signs in the dirt like they could.
The two looked up from the map, and Marchus motioned at some fields marked on it. "Your colony has a bit of a Jaebo infestation in some of their farms. We could help with that, and bring some to the Royals." He shrugged, "two birds with one stone."
Lairi snorted. "That's a boring idea. I was just saying that there are far more exciting fauna to hunt!"
Marchus tilted his head, "But are there any royals who have requested those 'more exciting' fauna?"
Lairi hesitated a moment, and then deflated. "No," she admitted grudgingly.
Marchus nodded, then turned to Glow. "What's the shortest way to the farms from here?"
Glow tilted her head thoughtfully, then nodded, and headed off with a "Follow me!"
She lead the hunters through the thin trails winding through the gully, caves dotting it's walls being used for homes, amd came out into a small but serviceable field that they had cleared. Below the treeline here, they towered high, dropping needles that the colonists used for fertilizer. It had been a naturally occurring clearing, once, but the colonists had cleared the grass, diverted some of a nearby stream, and plowed the ground so that their desired crops grew in the sandy mountain soil.
It was marred with holes dug by the jaebos, and a few perked up their ears at the colonists, eyes glinting in the sunlight.
"How do we catch them?" Glow asked, turning to Marchus and Lairi, who emerged, blinking, into the sunlight. "They're fast." She knew, having tried to catch some herself.
"We use snares," Marchus held up some strange things from his pack.
"If you're boring," Lairi snorted and pulled out a bow and arrow from hers.
Marchus wrinkled his nose. "At least let me get some snares set up before you start with that."
Glow followed him to set up the snares, watching as the jaebos scattered, only to watch them from afar, ears perked. "How do snares work?" she asked while Marchus set them up, and listened attentively as he explained. In the meantime, Lairi found a nice vantage point, eyeing the jaebos thoughtfully, and testing the draw of her bow.
As Glow and Marchus finished and withdrew, Lairi waited for the jaebos to emerge, then shot a bolt, managing to hit one cleanly. "Ha!" she exclaimed, but the sudden felling of one of their brethren and the shout caused the rest to go to ground.
Marchus grumbled as she collected her kill and suggested, "Maybe we should let the field be for a while. Change out the snares frequently." He nodded towards the woods. There's plenty more you can hunt out there."
Lairi sighed. "No fun," she muttered, but internally found some logic in that.
Glow took a moment to look back at the set snares, then followed the two hunters, thinking about what she'd learned. Maybe snares would take care of this problem…
